THE EFFECT OF A RECOMMENDED SPEED IN COMPARISON TO A MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT ON FEDERAL GERMAN MOTORWAYS. INTERIM REPORT 1976

AUSWIRKUNG EINER RICHTGESCHWINDIGKEIT IM VERGLEICH ZU EINER HOECHSTGESCHWINDIGKEIT AUF BUNDESAUTOBAHNEN. ZWISCHENBERICHT 1976.

IN THE COURSE OF LARGE SCALE TESTS ON SPECIALLY SELECTED STRETCHES OF FEDERAL GERMAN MOTORWAYS, THE EFFECTS WERE STUDIED OF MAXIMUM SPEED LIMITS OF 130 KM/H ON THE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR AND THE FREQUENCY OF ACCIDENTS. FOLLOWING THE EXPIRATION OF THIS FIRST TEST PHASE, ALL SPEED LIMITS WERE AGAIN LIFTED, ON THE PREVIOUS TEST STRETCHES RECOMMENDED SPEEDS CORRESPONDING TO THE MAXIMUM SPEED LIMITS WERE INTRODUCED. THE MAIN AIM OF THE LARGE SCALE TESTS WAS AN IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY (NUMBERS OF ACCIDENTS, SEVERITY OF ACCIDENTS). IN THE QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF THE VARIOUS SPEED REGULATIONS, SUCH FACTORS AS COSTS, TIME REQUIREMENTS, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH WERE CHOSEN AS PARAMETERS.
