POSSIBLE REACTIONS OF DRIVERS TO AVOID ACCIDENTS TO PEDESTRIANS

REAKTIONSMOEGLICHKEITEN DES FAHRERS ZUR VERMEIDUNG VON FUSSGAENGERUNFAELLEN

THIS REPORT DEALS WITH THE TYPICAL COURSE OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS ARISING FROM CARELESS CROSSING OF ROADS. VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES OF REACTION ON THE PART OF THE DRIVER ARE SELECTED AND EXPLAINED BY MEANS OF TRAFFIC-PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION. THE LIMITED RANGE OF REACTIONS OPEN TO THE DRIVER LEAD TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE ALLOWABLE SPEED OF 50 KM/H WHICH IS UNIVERSAL IN BUILT UP AREAS IS TOO HIGH, PARTICULARLY WHERE MANY UNPREDICTABLE PEDESTRIANS SUCH AS CHILDREN AND OLD PEOPLE CAN BE EXPECTED.
