BRACED METAL PLATE SECTIONS WHICH ARE STRESSED IN THEIR PLANES AND ARE THUS SUBJECT TO THE DANGER OF BUCKLING REPRESENT AN IMPORTANT STRUCTURAL UNIT OF WELDED STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS. WELL-KNOWN EXAMPLES ARE ROAD PLATES, WEB PLATES AND BOTTOM PLATES OF BRIDGES AS WELL AS BAFFLE PLATES OF STEEL STRUCTURES SUBMERGED IN WATER. THE PROPORTIONING PRINCIPLES FOR THESE METAL PLATE SECTIONS HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN THE CRITICAL BRANCHED LOADS CALCULATED USING THE LINEAR BUCKLING THEORY OF FLAT ELASTIC PLATES (SEE DIN 4114). IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN, HOWEVER, THAT THE CRITICAL STRESSING IS NOT SUFFICIENTLY EXPRESSIVE FOR MANY BUCKLING PROBLEMS. RECENTLY, PARTLY ARISING FROM INCIDENTS INVOLVING DAMAGE, ACTIVITIES FOR INVESTIGATING THE LOADING BEHAVIOUR OF BUCKLED SECTIONS WERE CONSIDERABLY INCREASED AT HOME AND ABROAD. THE OBJECTS OF THE TESTS ARE METAL SECTIONS WITH STIFFENERS WELDED ON ONE SIDE AND WHICH, AS COMPONENTS OF AN ASSEMBLED STEEL SUPPORTING STRUCTURE ARE STRESSED IN THEIR PLANES AND ARE THUS SUBJECTED TO THE DANGER OF BUCKLING. WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE "BRACED METAL SECTIONS" PROGRAMME, COMPRESSION IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION IS REGARDED AS THE MAIN STRESSING. PLATE SECTIONS WITH PREDOMINANTLY TANGENTIAL STRESS OCCUR ONLY AS WEBS OF SOLID-WALL AND BOX GIRDERS AND ARE NOT EXAMINED HERE.
