ANCHORAGE LENGTHS SPECIFIED IN DIN 1045 WERE DERIVED FROM TESTS. NO EXAMINATION WAS MADE OF THOSE CRITERIA WHICH AFFECT THE BEARING CAPACITY OF ANCHORS, PARTICULARLY IN THE REGION OF OVERLAPPING BARS. IT IS WELL-KNOWN THAT TRANSVERSE TENSILE STRESSES IN CONCRETE ARE SIGNIFICANT, BUT THERE IS NO INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON WAYS OF LIMITING OR REDUCING THESE. TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE WAY IN WHICH TRANSVERSE TENSILE STRESSES IN THE REGION OF THE ANCHORAGE OF RIBBED STEELS ARE SUPERIMPOSED ON ONE ANOTHER, AND THE MAGNITUDE OF STRESSES ABSORBED BY THE CONCRETE. TESTS ARE TO BE EXTENDED TO NORMAL AND LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURAL CONCRETE. SPECIMENS OF BEAMS HAVING VARYING WIDTH AND REINFORCEMENT IN THE TENSION ZONE ARE TO BE USED TO DETERMINE THE MISSING DATA ON THE LEVEL OF TRANSVERSE STRESS WHICH OCCURS, AND ON THE TRANSVERSE TENSILE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE.
