PROGRESS IN THIS DIRECTION MAY BE BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE COMBINATION OF BITUMEN WITH A SUITABLE PLASTIC MATERIAL. INTENSIVE PRACTICAL TESTING HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT, THE EMPHASIS BEING ON THE USE OF CURRENTLY AVAILABLE PLASTICS. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NO COMPARATIVE STUDIES TO DETERMINE COMBINATIONS WHICH ARE TECHNICALLY THE BEST AND BRING ABOUT ECONOMICALLY JUSTIFIABLE RESULTS. POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES ALSO NEED TO BE EXAMINED, SINCE RESULTS OBTAINED SO FAR ARE NOT UNIFORM. A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION IS TO COMPRISE THE FOLLOWING STEPS : EVALUATION OF THE LITERATURE ON BITUMEN-PLASTICS COMBINATIONS AND THEIR USE IN FLEXIBLE ROAD CONSTRUCTION; TESTING OF PROJECTED METHODS OF STUDY ON A BITUMEN-PLASTICS COMBINATION ALREADY PUT TO PRACTICAL USE; PRODUCTION OF A REPORT WITH A DETAILED WORKING PLAN AS A BASIS FOR THE FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT.
