BECAUSE OF THE INCREASE IN ROAD WEAR AND THE ASSOCIATED CONSEQUENCES WHICH REDUCE ROAD SAFETY, MORE IMPORTANCE HAS BEEN ATTACHED IN RECENT YEARS TO THE MEASUREMENT OF WEAR AND THE CONVERSION OF THE MEASUREMENTS INTO VALID VALUES. IN GERMANY ALONE THREE MEASURING PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN APPLIED IN VARIOUS FORMS, WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF RESEARCH PROJECTS; HITHERTO HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO STUDY OF THE COMPARABILITY OF SEVERAL WEAR MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED USING DIFFERENT METHODS. FOR THIS REASON FIELD STUDIES ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT ON A SECTION OF ROAD HAVING AS MANY DIFFERENTLY DESIGNED SURFACE COURSES AS POSSIBLE, BUT CARRYING THE SAME AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC, WHICH INVOLVE USING VARIOUS METHODS TO DETERMINE THE WEAR WHICH OCCURS IN WINTER. THERE ARE TWO AIMS: 1 - TO OBTAIN FURTHER DATA ON THE AMOUNT OF WINTER WEAR AND THE RESISTANCE TO WEAR WHICH CAN BE ACHIEVED BY VARIOUS SURFACINGS; THIS INFORMATION IS INTENDED AS A DECISION AID FOR MEASURES TO BE ADOPTED AFTER THE END OF THE PERMISSIBLE TIME PERIOD FOR STUDDED WINTER TYRES ON 30TH APRIL 1975; AND 2 - TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO COMPARE THE METHODS OF MEASUREMENT USED, BOTH WITH REGARD TO THE COSTS OF OPERATIONS AND PERSONNEL AND WITH REGARD TO THEIR MEASURING ACCURACY ON VARIOUS SURFACINGS.
