TESTING OF PASSIVE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR ROADS

ERPROBUNG PASSIVER SCHUTZEINRICHTUNGEN FUER STRASSEN

AS PART OF GENERAL EFFORTS TO INCREASE ROAD SAFETY, IN THE USA IN PARTICULAR MORE TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT ON PASSIVE PROTECTIVE DEVICES OTHER THAN SAFETY FENCES, AND THESE PASSIVE PROTECTIVE DEVICES ARE BEING TRIED IN PRACTICE. WHEREAS POSTS AND MASTS HAVING FRANGIBLE JOINTS CAN BE USED GENERALLY, COLLISION ABSORBERS (ENERGY ATTENUATION DEVICES), AS WELL AS REPLACING SAFETY FENCES FOR THE GENERAL PROTECTION OF FIXED OBJECTS ARE ESPECIALLY SUITED FOR THE POINTS OF SEPARATING ISLANDS ON THE EXIT RAMPS OF ELEVATED ROADS. THESE PROTECTIVE DEVICES WHICH ARE ALREADY ON THE MARKET IN THE USA ARE TO BE STUDIED IN COLLISION TESTS WITH VEHICLES ON THE ROAD IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, IN ORDER TO CHECK THE SUITABILITY OF DESIGNS WHICH ARE NOW BEING OFFERED IN GERMANY AND IN OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ON AN EXPERIMENTAL BASIS. THE RESULTS WILL ENABLE AN EVALUATION TO BE MADE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THEIR PRACTICAL USE, TAKING ACCOUNT OF TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC AND LEGAL VIEWPOINTS. IF NECESSARY, NEW, MORE SUITABLE AND MORE ECONOMIC DESIGNS WOULD HAVE TO BE DEVELOPED AND TESTED.
