TESTING THE PERCEPTIBILITY OF CARRIAGEWAY MARKINGS ON LIGHT-COLOURED SURFACINGS

UEBERPRUEFUNG DER ERKENNBARKEIT VON FAHRBAHNMARKIERUNGEN AUF AUFGEHELLTEN DECKSCHICHTEN

FOR REASONS OF ROAD SAFETY (EARLY PERCEPTIBILITY OF OBSTACLES) BRIGHT (LIGHT-COLOURED) SURFACINGS HAVE TO BE BUILT EVEN WHEN BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION IS USED. WITH REFERENCE TO THE CONTRAST REQUIRED BETWEEN WHITE CARRIAGEWAY MARKINGS AND LIGHT-COLOURED BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS, DATA ARE TO BE OBTAINED ON THE REFLECTION PROPERTIES (BY DAY AND NIGHT) OF BOTH SURFACES. THE PROJECT IS A NECESSARY SUPPLEMENT TO THE CURRENT WORK ON THE THEME "LIGHTENED ROAD SURFACINGS". THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES INFLUENCE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE DAY VISIBILITY OF MARKINGS WHICH ARE LAID DOWN IN THE "TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TESTING OF MARKING MATERIALS FOR FEDERAL MAIN ROADS", PUBLISHED BY BAST. AFTER THE SELECTION OF SUITABLE SECTIONS OF ROAD FOR THE MEASUREMENTS, MARKING MATERIALS HAVING WELL-KNOWN PROPERTIES ARE TO BE LAID ON LIGHT-COLOURED SURFACINGS OF VARIOUS TYPES. AT REGULAR INTERVALS AND OVER A FAIRLY LONG PERIOD OF TIME THE MARKINGS ARE TO BE CHECKED FOR PERCEPTIBILITY ON THE SURFACINGS, AND EVALUATED. REFLECTIVITY MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE BOTH ON THE MARKINGS AND ON THE SURFACINGS, AND THESE WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY VISUAL EVALUATION. THE STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT BOTH BY DAY AND BY NIGHT.
