RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ON TWO-LANED MAIN ROADS (CONTROL STUDY)

ZUSAMMENHANG ZWISCHEN VERKEHRSUNFAELLEN UND VERKEHRSBEDINGUNGEN AUF ZWEISPURIGEN LANDSTRASSEN (KONTROLLUNTERSUCHUNG)

RESEARCH PROJECTS F.A. 3.604 (IRRD NO. 039052) AND F.A. 3.607 (IRRD NO 056019) WERE CONCERNED WITH THE RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND ASPECTS OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON TWO-LANED MAIN ROADS. IT WAS SHOWN THAT WHEN THERE IS LITTLE TRAFFIC THE DRIVING ACCIDENT RATE IS PARTICULARLY HIGH, AND THAT REAR-END COLLISIONS ARE PARTICULARLY PREVALENT WHEN THERE IS A LOT OF TRAFFIC. THE NUMBER OF OVERTAKING ACCIDENTS SHOWS A U-SHAPED DEPENDENCE ON TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE ACCIDENT COST RATE DECREASES WITH INCREASING TRAFFIC VOLUME. SINCE WITH THE FINANCIAL MEANS AVAILABLE ONLY A SMALL RANDOM SAMPLE OF ASSESSABLE ACCIDENTS COULD BE CONSIDERED, THE RESULTS CANNOT BE TAKEN AS GENERALLY VALID WITHOUT FURTHER STUDIES. TI IS THEREFORE THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT TO CARRY OUT ADDITIONAL ACCIDENT STUDIES ON MORE SECTIONS OF ROAD, USING THE SAME METHODS AS IN THE PREVIOUS WORK. IN ORDER TO SAVE MONEY ASSOCIATED TRAFFIC OBSERVATIONS WILL NOT BE CARRIED OUT. THE WORK IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A BROAD BASIS OF SUPPORT FOR THE PREVIOUS RESULTS. A NUMERICAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE QUESTION OF ROAD SAFETY IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC VOLUME ON MAIN ROADS CAN BE WORKED OUT, WHICH MIGHT BE INCORPORATED INTO RECOMMENDATIONS.
