ENTRY AIDS ON MOTORWAY RAMPS IN CONURBATIONS.BASIC TRAFFIC ENGINEERING RESEARCH; DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF AN INFORMATION SYSTEM TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW

FROM THE USA,SYSTEMS OF ENTRY AIDS ARE KNOWN BY MEANS OF WHICH TRAFFIC FLOW AT MOTORWAY ENTRY POINTS CAN BE IMPROVED.TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT TO SEE WHETHER BEHAVIOURAL RECOMMENDATIONS OF THIS NATURE CAN BE USED IN EUROPEAN,PARTICULARLY IN GERMAN CONDITIONS.WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT TRAFFIC FLOW ON A BUSY MOTORWAY BETWEEN AN EXIT AND AN ENTRY POINT IS TO BE STUDIED IN ORDER TO DEVELOP BASIC MODELS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND INSTALLATION OF ENTRY AIDS.THE INTENTION IS FIRSTLY TO MEASURE THE TRAFFIC FLOW ON ONE CARRIAGEWAY OF THE MOTORWAY WHEN THERE ARE NO INFLUENCES ON IT,AND THEN TO INCLUDE THE EFFECTS OF RECOMMENDED SPEEDS AND PROHIBITIONS ON CHANGES FROM LANE 1 TO LANE 2.AN ATTEMPT IS TO BE MADE TO DESCRIBE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR ON THE DIRECTIONAL CARRIAGEWAY BELOW THE PEAK OF THE ISLAND BY MEANS OF A MODEL INTO WHICH ARE PUT THE DATA MEASURED BETWEEN THE EXIT AND ENTRY POINT, AND TO EXTEND AN EXISTING SIMULATION MODEL FOR DETERMINING THE CAPACITY OF MOTORWAY ACCESS RAMPS (SEE F.A. 1V,105; IRRD 57537) IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE RELATION FOUND BY SIMULATION CAN BE TESTED FOR ITS PRACTICAL APPLICABILITY.THE PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF AN INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR ENTERING TRAFFIC IS RESERVED FOR A FURTHER RESEARCH PROJECT.
