THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE GEOMETRIC DESIGN IN LOCATION PLAN AND LONGITUDINAL SECTION AND OF THE CROSS-SECTIONAL DESIGN OF GRADE-SEPARATED URBAN ROADS ARE TO BE DEFINED,AND PRACTICABLE DESIGN PRINCIPLES ARE TO BE DERIVED FROM THEM. FOR THIS IT IS NECESSARY TO EXAMINE THE SPECIFICALLY URBAN CONDITIONS OF TRAFFIC AND THE LOCALITY AS REGARDS THEIR EFFECTS ON THE DESIGN CRITERIA.THESE SHOULD INCLUDE TRAFFIC ASPECTS (QUALITY OF THE TRAFFIC FLOW,LIMITS OF LOADING), THE COMPATIBILITY OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE TRANSPORT (DEMANDS ON ALIGNMENT,NETWORK DESIGN),THE LAYOUT OF THE TRAFFIC FACILITIES (LIGHTING,MARKING,SIGNPOSTING),AND THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC (INFLUENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT,PROTECTIVE MEASURES, DESIRABLE OR REASONABLE USE OF NEIGHBOURING AREAS, DEVELOPMENT OF NEIGHBOURING AREAS).AN EVALUATION OF SELECTED EXAMPLES OF GRADE SEPARATED URBAN ROADS AND OF EXISTING RECOMMENDATIONS AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES BY MEANS OF A BASIC STUDY OF NATIONAL AND FOREIGN LITERATURE IS ANTICIPATED.IN ORDER TO SUBSTANTIATE THE EVALUATIONS, OBJECTIVE COUNTS,OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH INTO TRAFFIC FLOW AND ACCIDENTS ARE TO BE EXAMINED.
