THE FLOATING CAR METHOD AND THE NUMBER PLATE DETECTION METHOD ARE NORMALLY CURRENTLY USED FOR THE EVALUATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW BY MEANS OF MEASUREMENTS.BOTH METHODS ARE TO BE COMPARED IN TWO WAYS.LITERATURE SEARCHES ENABLE ONE TO DETERMINE THE TIME AND SPACE AREAS IN WHICH BOTH METHODS HAVE BEEN USED UP TO NOW AND THE EXPERIENCE GAINED.BEYOND THIS IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT,IN A TEST NETWORK EMPLOYING CURRENT METHODS OF CONTROL,COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE OF SELECTED TRAFFIC RELATIONS,TOGETHER WITH SPACE-TIME MEASUREMENTS RELATED TO TRAFFIC DENSITY,TRAFFIC COMPOSITION, JOURNEY PURPOSE ETC.THE AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO DEFINE POSSIBLE USES OF BOTH METHODS OF MEASUREMENT AND TO WORK OUT LIMIT VALUES WHICH ENABLE A REALISTIC ESTIMATE OF COSTS & BENEFITS TO BE MADE BEFORE ONE OF THE TWO METHODS IS DECIDED UPON.
