BECAUSE OF THE LARGE DIFFERENCES IN CAPACITY BETWEEN THE CROSS SECTION OF A MOTORWAY (A 4MS) AND THE WIDEST TWO- LANED ROAD (B 2S), IT IS NECESSARY TO DEVELOP A HIGH- CAPACITY INTERMEDIATE CROSS SECTION HAVING 4 LANES (B 4MS), WHICH CAN FULLY FULFIL ITS FUNCTION IN THE ROAD NETWORK DESPITE LOWER INVESTMENT COSTS. IN A DISCUSSION OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE CROSS-SECTION WHICH COULD POSSIBLY BE REDUCED IN WIDTH, THE QUESTION AROSE AS TO WHETHER LANE WIDTHS OF 3.25M COULD BE PERMITTED INSTEAD OF 3.75M. THE RESEARCH WILL ATTEMPT TO CLARIFY THIS QUESTION BY MEANS OF OBJECTIVE TESTS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT RELEVANT INFLUENCING FACTORS AND MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES WILL BE DETERMINED, AND THAT REGRESSION ANALYSES WILL BE USED TO ESTABLISH HOW A LANE WIDTH OF 3.75, 3.50 OR 3.25M INFLUENCES THE BEHAVIOUR OF INDIVIDUAL VEHICLES AND/OR TRAFFIC FLOW DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC VOLUMES ON OTHERWISE COMPARABLE SECTIONS OF ROAD. IT WILL ALSO BE ESTABLISHED, BY MEANS OF INTERVIEWS, HOW COMPARABLE SECTIONS HAVING DIFFERENT LANE WIDTHS ARE EVALUATED BY ROAD USERS. DATA ON SAFETY ON COMPARABLE SECTIONS HAVING DIFFERENT LANE WIDTHS ARE EXPECTED FROM AN EVALUATION OF ACCIDENT STATISTICS. MOREOVER INVESTIGATIONS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT TO SEE WHETHER, ON THE BASIS OF THE STUDY RESULTS, IT WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS TO HAVE A SPEED LIMIT ON ROADS WITH REDUCED LANE WIDTHS.
