TRENDS IN DISTANCES DRIVEN AND TRAFFIC MOTIVATION IN PRIVATE TRANSPORT

ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN FUER FAHRWEITEN UND FAHRTMOTIVE IM INDIVIDUELLEN KFZ-VERKEHR

FOR THE DESIGN OF THE ROAD NETWORK AND ITS INDIVIDUAL SECTIONS THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA ARE, APART FROM TRAFFIC DENSITY, THE PROPERTIES WHICH CHARACTERIZE TRAFFIC - PARTICULARLY JOURNEY PURPOSE AND JOURNEY LENGTH. THE RELATIONS BETWEEN JOURNEY PURPOSES, JOURNEY LENGTH AND OPTIMUM SPEEDS, INDICATED IN THE BASIC TABLE ON ROAD NETWORK DESIGN (RAL-N) HAVE TO BE COMPLETED AND FURTHER DEFINED. FOR THIS THERE IS A LACK OF BASIC DATA ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN MOBILITY AND ESPECIALLY ON FUTURE TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS AS A FUNCTION OF SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, REGIONAL AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO OBTAIN DATA ON THE CURRENT FREQUENCY, TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION AND DEVELOPMENT HITHERTO OF JOURNEY PURPOSES AND LENGTHS, TO WORK OUT PRINCIPLES FOR FORECASTING THE FREQUENCY AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF JOURNEY PURPOSES AND LENGTHS AND TO EXTEND RESEARCH INTO THE BEHAVIOUR OF ROAD USERS. THE NECESSARY DATA ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM INTERVIEWS AT URBAN AND REGIONAL JOURNEY DESTINATIONS, FROM A COMBINATION OF INTERVIEWS AND TRAFFIC COUNTS (CROSS SECTION AND PARKING AREA COUNTS), FROM INTERVIEWS IN PARKING AREAS, FROM QUESTIONNAIRES HANDED OUT IN PARKING AREAS, AT PLACES OF WORK AND IN SHOPS, AND FROM SUPPLEMENTARY TRAFFIC COUNTS (CROSS SECTION AND NUMBER PLATES COUNTS, PARKING SPACE COUNTS).
