THE USE OF FOAMED SLAG AS A THERMALLY INSULATING AGGREGATE FOR FIRST ROADBASES

THE HIGH POROSITY, GOOD INDIVIDUAL PARTICLE STRENGTH, THE HIGH PROPORTION OF GLASSY, I.E. RELATIVELY POORLY HEAT CONDUCTING, CONSTITUENTS, SEEM TO MAKE FOAMED BLAST FURNACE SLAG A SUITABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL FOR A BEARING AND THERMALLY INSULATING COURSE IN ROADS. IN TWO TEST AREAS, FOAMED SLAG WILL BE LAID AS A THERMAL INSULATOR AND AS A ROADBASE AND TOGETHER WITH A TEST SECTION CONSTRUCTED IN THE STANDARD MANNER WILL BE TESTED FOR ITS THERMAL INSULATION AND BEARING CAPACITY. THE BEARING CAPACITY WILL BE DETERMINED BY DYNAMIC LOADING, THE 'FALLING WHEEL,' BY MEASUREMENTS OF SINKING AND STRAIN AT THE ROAD SURFACE, AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES.
