IN THE UTILISATION OF THE HYDRAULIC HARDENING CAPACITY OF BLAST FURNACE SLAG AND HYDRAULICALLY BOUND MINERAL MATERIALS, THE QUESTION ARISES AS TO THE STRENGTH OF THE INDIVIDUAL PARTICLES AND THE DESIRABLE GRADING. MODES OF OPERATION AND RANGE OF APPLICABILITY WILL BE GIVEN AND TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC SOLUTIONS WILL BE ESTABLISHED. NINE TEST SECTIONS, EACH 200 M LONG, WILL BE LAID ON THE B 223 NEAR DORSTEN. ON A UNIFORM EARTH FORMATION, DIFFERENT VARIATIONS OF FROST BLANKETS AND OTHER ROADBASES OF SANDY GRAVEL AND BLAST FURNACE SLAG WILL BE TRIED. AN ADDITIONAL AREA WILL BE LAID IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARD, TO PROVIDE MEANS OF COMPARISON. ON THE ROADBASE, PAVINGS OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES WILL BE LAID. ON THE ROADBASES (AND THE FROST BLANKETS), THE FOLLOWING TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT: GRANULOMETRY AND MIX PROPORTIONS WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF MINERALS, DEGREE OF COMPACTION AND PORE CONTENT OF THE LAID COURSES, DETERMINATION OF THE THICKNESSES OF THE COURSES, BEARING CAPACITY WITH THE PLATE BEARING TEST AND THE BENKELMAN BEAM. THE BEHAVIOUR UNDER TRAFFIC WILL BE CHECKED REGULARLY WITH THE BENKELMAN BEAM, AND LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE PROFILES WILL BE MEASURED. THE TRAFFICABILITY FACTOR WILL ALSO BE DETERMINED. IN ADDITION TO THE FIELD TESTS, ALL THE CHARACTERICTICS OF INTEREST WILL ALSO BE DETERMINED IN THE LABORATORY. HERE, IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL TEST METHODS, OTHER TEST METHODS WILL BE USED, E.G. CHEMICAL AND X-RAY ANALYSIS AND MECHANICAL TESTS (SUCH AS THE LOS ANGELES TEST).
