CREATION OF A SIMULATION MODEL FOR TRAFFIC FLOW ON TWO- LANE, TWO-WAY ROADS

SINCE SO FAR THE REALISTIC DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAFFIC FLOW ON TWO-LANE, TWO-WAY ROADS HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT QUITE SATISFACTORILY ON AN ANALYTICAL BASIS WITH THE AID OF PURELY EMPIRICAL STUDIES, THE CONTINUAL MUTUAL INFLUENCE OF THE TRAFFIC STREAMS IN THE TWO DIRECTIONS OF TRAVEL OUGHT TO BE DESCRIBED BY SIMULTANEOUS CONSIDERATION OF THE MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC PARAMETERS OF THIS TRAFFIC FLOW WITH THE AID OF SIMULATION. WORKING ON THE BASIS OF RESEARCH AT PRESENT IN PROGRESS AND OF PARTIAL RESULTS AVAILABLE FROM THE LITERATURE, CONCERNING THE PROBLEM OF DRIVING BEHAVIOUR ON TWO-LANE, TWO-WAY ROADS, A SIMULATION MODEL IS TO BE DEVELOPED, THE SUBROUTINES OF WHICH WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE STVO RELEVANT AT THE MOMENT AND THE ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR OF DRIVERS. CONTRARY TO WHAT IS DONE IN KNOWN SIMULATION MODELS, THE TWO DIRECTIONS WILL BE GIVEN 'EQUAL RIGHTS.' THE SUBROUTINES WILL BE SET UP IN SUCH A FORM THAT CONTINUOUS CONTROL BY MEANS OF EMPIRICALLY DETERMINED DATA WILL BE POSSIBLE. THE INPUT AND OUTPUT FACILITIES OF THE OVERALL MODEL WILL BE SO DESIGNED THAT A VARIETY OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING PROBLEMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF BEING ANSWERED. ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS, WHICH IS IN FACT TO BE STUDIED WITHIN THE PROJECT ENVISAGED, IS THAT OF THE CAPACITY OF ONE DIRECTION AS A FUNCTION OF THE TRAFFIC LOADING ON THE OTHER DIRECTION.
