MODEL TESTS OF RUN-OFF OF RAINWATER ON WINDING SECTIONS OF ROADS AND THEIR EVALUATION BY ANALOGUES AND A STUDY OF THE POSSIBILITES OF IMPROVEMENT OF WATER RUN-OFF BY CONSTRUCTIONAL MEASURES

EVEN WHEN A SMALL MINIMUM ANGLE OF SLOPE IS MAINTAINED THERE IS ALWAYS THE DANGER OF AQUAPLANING WITH A QUITE SMALL INCREASE IN THE THICKNESS OF THE WATER FILM. A BASIS IS TO BE WORKED OUT BY MEANS OF WHICH WINDING SECTIONS CAN BE GIVEN AN OPTIMUM CONFIGURATION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF WATER RUN-OFF. THE CONSTRUCTIONAL CONFIGURATION OF WINDING SECTIONS AS A FUNCTION OF DESIGN SPEED AND ROUTING ELEMENTS IS TO BE WORKED ON. TO STUDY THE DRAINAGE OF ROAD SURFACE, EXPERIMENTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT ON MODELS AND ON ACTUAL CONVENTIONALLY DESIGNED WINDING SECTIONS, AS WELL AS WINDING SECTIONS WITH A SHIFTING RIDGE LINE. EXPERIMENTAL MODELS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED WITH DIFFERENT SURFACES AND WITH A SPRINKLING INSTALLATION. IN THE EXPERIMENTS, THE WATER FILM THICKNESSES WILL BE DETERMINED PHOTOGRAMMETRICALLY IN THE STEADY-STATE CASE AND WHERE NECESSARY FOR THE RUN-OFF AFTER THE CESSATION OF RAIN, AND EVALUATED FOR THE CREATION OF PROFILES AND CONTOUR LINES. CONTROL AND COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENTS WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT ON CONSTRUCTION SITES. ANALOGUE MODELS WILL BE WORKED OUT, PROGRAMMES WILL BE WRITTEN FOR ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING AND FINALLY, THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMUM TRANSITION SECTIONS WILL BE VARIED. THE PROGRAMME IS EXPECTED TO LAST FOR TWO YEARS.
