FIVE INSTRUMENTS FOR SIMULATING WEAR HAVE BEEN TESTED IN THE LABORATORY. THESE INSTRUMENTS ENABLE THE INFLUENCE OF THE MATERIALS AND THE MATERIAL MIX ON THE WEAR PERFORMANCE TO BE DETERMINED NUMERICALLY. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE LABORATORY VALUES AND THE WEAR OCCURRING ON A ROAD CARRYING TRAFFIC IS NOT YET KNOWN. IT IS THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH TO DETERMINE THIS RELATION AND, FROM MEASUREMENTS IN THE LABORATORY, TO DRAW CONCLUSIONS AS TO THE WEAR ON ROADS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC. IF THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED, THE CONSTRUCTION OF TEST SECTIONS COULD BE DISPENSED WITH. UNDER A RESEARCH CONTRACT, ON THE MUNICH - HOLZKIRCHEN AUTOBAHN, A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF 30 TEST AREAS TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF THE IMPACT STRENGTH OF CHIPPINGS ON THE WEAR OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS. SAMPLES OF MIXES AND DRILL CORES WILL BE TAKEN AND SUBJECTED TO WEAR SIMULATION IN THE LABORATORY. THE WEAR DETERMINED IN THE LABORATORY WILL BE RELATED TO THAT ACTUALLY MEASURED. IT IS DESIRED TO FIND THE MACHINE WHICH WILL BEST ASSIST IN THE PREDICTION OF WEAR.
