INVESTIGATION OF DE-ICING SALT DAMAGE TO CONCRETE SUPERSTRUCTURES

DAMAGE BY DE-ICING SALTS HAS BEEN FOUND ON CONCRETE BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES. THE SEALING OF THE BRIDGE IS PENETRATED BY SURFACE WATER CONTAINING DE-ICING SALTS, AND THE CONCRETE IS ATTACKED. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE ATTACK BY SUCH SURFACE WATER, A LARGE NUMBER OF BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES WERE IMPREGNATED. BY NOW, 25 BRIDGES SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. TO DO THIS, THE COVERING OF THE SUPERSTRUCTURE CONCRETE IS CUT OUT DRY, WITH THE SEALING, BARING THE CONCRETE. THE CONDITION OF THE CONCRETE IS ASSESSED LOCALLY. SOME SAMPLES OF THE CONCRETE ARE TAKEN FOR ANALYSIS FOR DE-ICING SALTS. FROM THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY WILL DEPEND WHETHER IMPREGNATION OF SUPERSTRUCTURES IS DESIRABLE.
