SELECTION OF MICROORGANISMS METABOLIZING HYDROCARBONS WITH A VIEW TO THEIR BEING USED IN THE STUDY OF THE CHEMICAL NATURE OF ASPHALTIC BITUMEN

SELECCION DE MICROORGANISMOS QUE METABOLIZAN HIDROCARBUROS PARA SU EMPLEO EN EL ESTUDIO DE LA NATURALEZA QUIMICA DEL BETUN ASFALTICO

THE SPECIFIC ASPECT OF THE AGGRESSIVITY OF MICROORGANISMS AGAINST SUBSTANCES DIFFERING IN NATURE AND CHEMICAL STRUCTURE PERMITS THE APPLICATION OF MICROBIOLOGICAL METHODS TO THE STUDY OF THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF BITUMEN. THERE IS THEREFORE A NEED TO SELECT MICROORGANISMS WHICH ATTACK BITUMINOUS MATERIALS. WITH THIS AIM IN VIEW, A VEGETABLE SOIL WITH A HIGH ORGANIC CONTENT WAS TREATED WITH HYDROCARBONS DIFFERING IN NATURE. ONCE THE MICROORGANISMS WERE ISOLATED, THEY WERE CLASSIFIED BY MEANS OF MORPHOLOGICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL TESTS. 54 VARIETIES OF BACTERIA WERE ISOLATED.
