DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATIONS OF NATURAL BITUMENS AND BITUMENS DERIVED FROM PETROLEUM IN ARGENTINA, AND OF THE MAIN DEPOSITS AND THEIR STANDARDIZATION (IRAM, ASTM). THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT DERIVED FROM PETROLEUM (DENSITY, PENETRATION, SOFTENING POINT, DUCTILITY, ASPHALTENE, LOSSES THROUGH HEAT, RHEOLOGY) ARE OUTLINED. THE USE OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS EXAMINED. MENTION IS MADE OF TEST METHODS NORMALLY USED (CBR, INSTITUT DE L'ASPHALTE) AND OF NEW ONES: MEASUREMENT OF THERMAL CHANGES IN THE TEST ON LOSSES IN FINE ROTATING FILM. MODIFICATIONS IN CONSISTENCY, ALTERATION OR HARDENING WERE INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF THE GRIFFIN MICROVISCOMETER OR THE CAPILLARY VISCOMETER OF THE INSTITUT DE L'ASPHALTE. THE MIXTURES MOST COMMONLY USED ARE THE CONVENTIONAL ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES, AND OTHER MIXTURES CONTAINING SPECIAL AGGREGATES (TUF-SAND, CALCAREOUS SAND). HOT-COATED MATERIALS CONTAINING GAP-GRADED STONE AGGREGATES, MASTIC ASPHALT WITH A HIGH FILLER CONTENT AND HARD BITUMEN CONTENT, AND GUSSASPHALT ARE RARELY USED.
