URBAN PLANNING AND TRANSPORT

EL PLANEAMIENTO URBANO Y EL TRANSPORTE

THE EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF PRIVATE CARS IN TOWNS CAUSES EXTENSIVE BOTTLENECKS IN CENTRAL AND URBAN AREAS, IMPEDES PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND CONTRIBUTES TO ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION, NOISE, NEUROSIS AND ACCIDENTS. IT IS CONSIDERED NECESSARY TO CHANNEL THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE PROPORTION OF PEOPLE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICES OFFERING ACCEPTABLE ECONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS. TRAFFIC IS ENVISAGED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF SPACE PLANNING, COMPOSITION OF DAILY TRAFFIC, ASPECTS AFFECTING URBAN TRANSPORT PLANNING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT CHOICE AS AN OPTIMUM SOLUTION IN PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES, IN ORDER TO AVOID BOTTLENECKS AND CONGESTION IN TOWN CENTRES. THE PAPER EMPHASISES THE INTERDEPENDENCE BETWEEN TRANSPORT DEMAND AND LAND USE. FINALLY CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN WHICH ARE OF INTEREST TO THE INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMS CHARGED WITH TOWN PLANNING.
