MARSHALL MIX DESIGN CRITERIA

CRITERIOS DE DOSIFICACION MARSHALL

THE MARSHALL METHOD IS THE METHOD OF MIX DESIGN WHICH IS MOST WIDELY USED FOR THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES BY MEANS OF MECHANICAL TESTS. IT IS CURRENTLY USED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY IN THE REGIONAL HIGHWAY LABORATORIES. THE METHOD IS DESCRIBED, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MIX CRITERIA SINCE THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF 1965 AND 1975 IS OUTLINED WITH REFERENCE TO THE CIRCULAR OF 1972. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VARIATIONS IS THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE MARSHALL COEFFICIENT OF RIGIDITY. THE DIFFICULTIES INVOLVED IN ADHERING TO THE REQUIRED COEFFICIENT OF VOIDS IN THE MIXTURES ARE DISCUSSED. THE CRITERION REGARDING THE FILLING OF VOIDS WITH BITUMEN HAS ALSO DISAPPEARED. THE CRITERIA FOR THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CURRENTLY APPLIED IN SPAIN ARE VERY DIFFERENT. IT IS NORMAL TO CONSIDER AS OPTIMUM THE PERCENTAGE OF BITUMEN CORRESPONDING TO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: MAXIMUM STABILITY, MAXIMUM MARSHALL RIGIDITY COMPATIBLE WITH A DEFORMATION LESS THAN 2.5 MM, PERCENTAGE OF BITUMEN CORRESPONDING TO 4% OF VOIDS IN THE MIXTURE, COMBINATION OF STABILITY, DEFORMATION AND VOIDS IN THE MIXTURE. THE LATTER IS THE BEST. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE OF A CEIA SESSION DEVOTED TO THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, WHICH TOOK PLACE IN MADRID BETWEEN 1ST AND 5TH MARCH, 1976.
