CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES FOR HIGHWAY SURFACINGS. APPLICATION TO THE CASE OF GAP GRADED MIXES

CONTRIBUCION AL ESTUDIO DE LAS PROPIEDADES DE MEZCLAS ASFALTICAS PARA EL PROYECTO DE PAVIMENTOS DE CARRETERAS. APLICACION AL CASO DE MEZCLA DE GRANULOMETRIA DISCONTINUA

A STUDY IS MADE OF THE CONDITIONS WHICH MIXTURES MUST FULFIL BEFORE THEY ARE INCORPORATED IN THE WEARING COURSES OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. STRESS IS LAID ON THE POSSIBILITY OF USING BITUMINOUS MIXES WITH GAP GRADED AGGREGATES. THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE DISCUSSED: (1.1) ELASTIC AND VISCO-ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXES. METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE ELASTIC AND VISCO-ELASTIC MODULI. (1.2) THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT FACTORS (TEMPERATURE, LOADING TIME, COMPACTION, PROPORTION OF BINDER AND ITS PENETRATION) ON THE RIGIDITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXES. (1.3) MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. TESTS OF STABILITY. TENSILE STRENGTH AND SHEAR STRENGTH. (1.4) FATIGUE STRENGTH. (1.5) RESISTANCE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS TO SKIDDING. (1.6) RESISTANCE TO TRACKING. (1.7) COMPACTIBILITY, DURABILITY AND PERMEABILITY. (2) METHODS OF BITUMINOUS MIX DESIGN (BASED ON THE COMPACTION OF THE STRUCTURE, AND THE SPECIFIC SURFACE). (3) INFLUENCE OF GAPS IN GRADING ON THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXES. EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES USING MARSHALL TESTS, TRIAXIAL AND PERMEABILITY TESTS ON MIXES WITH GAP GRADED AGGREGATES FROM WHICH IT APPEARS THAT THEIR PROPERTIES ARE SOMETIMES SUPERIOR TO THOSE WITH CONTINUOUSLY GRADED AGGREGATES. THE ABSENCE OF AGGREGATES OF INTERMEDIATE SIZES IN THE COMPOSITION OF BITUMINOUS MIXES IS NOT ONLY PERFECTLY ADMISSIBLE BUT MAY EVEN BE DESIRABLE; THE SIZES WHICH ARE LEAST ADAPTABLE ARE THOSE BETWEEN 2 MM AND 8 MM.
