PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS LOSE PATRONAGE

LOS TRANSPORTES PUBLICOS PIERDEN CLIENTES

TRAFFIC STATISTICS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM SHOW A DECREASE IN THE PATRONAGE OF BUSES AND TRAINS OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS, WHILE THE USE OF CARS IS ON THE INCREASE. TO ATTRACT TRAVELLERS TO BUSES, TARIFFS WERE LOWERED, THE GOVERNMENT OFFERED SUBSIDIES WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS. THIS CRISIS LED TO A CHANGE IN TRANSPORT POLICY, A REDUCTION IN SUBSIDIES TO BUSES, AN INCREASE IN RAPID INTERURBAN BUS SERVICES, AN UPDATING OF THE PRESENT LAW GOVERNING TRANSPORT, AND AN ATTEMPT AT DEVELOPING NEW TRANSPORT MODES: MINIBUSES AND SHARED TAXIS.
