AN ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF THE CURRENTLY USED METHOD OF SUPERELEVATING A RAILWAY TRACK AS A FUNCTION OF THE DEGREE OF CURVATURE AND SPEED. THE FORMULAE USED DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE VALUE OF THE HEIGHT OF THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY OR THE WIDTH OF THE TRACK, WHICH ARE TWO ESSENTIAL FACTORS OF STABILITY. A NEW DESIGN METHOD IS PROPOSED, THAT TAKES THESE TWO VARIABLES INTO CONSIDERATION. A SAFETY INDEX AS REGARDS OVERTURNING IS QUOTED.
