STUDY OF MATERIALS AND CONCRETE FOR RIGID PAVEMENTS

THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED OF PAVEMENT CONCRETE ARE: BENDING AND TENSILE STRENGTH, RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE, HOMOGENEITY, WORKABILITY, COHESION, LOW SHRINKAGE, AND HIGH INITIAL STRENGTH. ONCE BUILT, THE PAVEMENT WILL HAVE TO WITHSTAND SEVERE SURFACE WEAR, BLACK ICE AND DEICING SALTS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE NEW TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR RIGID PAVEMENTS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE TYPES OF CEMENT FOR WHICH THE TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE CONTENT AND THE RESIDUE RETAINED ARE LIMITED TO A 4900-MESH SIEVE, BUT THE SPECIFIC SURFACE OF WHICH IS NOT LIMITED. FINE AGGREGATES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF SILICA PARTICLES AND A MODULUS OF FINENESS COMPRISED BETWEEN TWO EXTREME VALUES. THE TYPES OF CONCRETE TO USE ARE DEFINED TOGETHER WITH FLEXURAL AND TENSILE STRENGTH TESTS, MINIMUM CEMENT PROPORTION AND LIMIT OF THE TOTAL QUANTITY OF FINES. QUALITY CONTROL IS MENTIONED. CONCRETE STRENGTH TESTS ARE DIVIDED INTO 4 TYPES: PRELIMINARY, PROPERTIES, IN-SITU CONTROL AND INFORMATION TESTS. AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION MUST BE BUILT AS REFERENCE FOR CASES OF DISCONTINUITY IN IN-SITU TEST RESULTS. SURFACE TEXTURE IS CONTROLLED BY MEANS OF THE SAND PATCH METHOD; THE THICKNESS BY EXTRACTING CORES AND THE SURFACE EVENNESS BY MEANS OF THE 3-METRE RULER.
