A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE DAMAGES CAUSED TO HIGHWAY STRUCTURES BY THE EARTHQUAKE, THE RESULTING PROBLEMS AND THE NECESSITY OF INSISTING ON SAFETY AT THE DESIGN STAGE. THE ANALYSIS OF THE DAMAGE ALSO SHOWS THAT, TOGETHER WITH THE FORCES TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT STRUCTURES, THE FOLLOWING FACTORS MUST ALSO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION: (1) LENGTH AND WIDTH OF REASONABLE BEARING DEVICES; (2) ADEQUATE ANCHORAGE BETWEEN BEAMS AND BEARING DEVICES; (3) ADEQUATE SUPPORT OF THE CONCRETE MASS WITH ABUTMENTS; (4) ANCHORAGE OF THE REINFORCEMENT BY MEANS OF HOOKS WHATEVER THE DIAMETER OF THE BARS, AS STRONG APPLIED STRESSES DESTROY THE ADHESION OF BARS WHICH APPEAR TO HAVE THE REQUIRED SURFACE CONDITIONS. THE ANTI-SEISMIC STANDARDS IN ARGENTINA: CONCAR 70 AND CHAPTER 7 OF THE PRAEH INCORPORATE THE ABOVE MEASURES.
