AN EVALUATION OF ROAD MARKING MATERIALS

PERSONNEL OF THE MISSISSIPPI STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT REQUESTED SAMPLES OF TRAFFIC PAINT FROM MANUFACTURERS IN THE SOUTHEAST WHO WERE INTERESTED IN SELLING PAINT TO THE STATE. SEVENTEEN COMMERCIAL FORMULATIONS WERE SUPPLIED WHICH WERE EVALUATED ON THREE TYPES OF ROADWAY SURFACES WITH THE PRESENT STATE SPECIFICATION PAINT AS A CONTROL. THE PRESENT STATE PAINT WAS USED FOR STUDIES OF FILM THICKNESS AND APPLICATION RATES FOR BEADS. MISSISSIPPI'S PART OF THE NATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION PROGRAM ON TRAFFIC MARKING BEADS WAS EXPANDED AND CONDUCTED AS A PART OF THIS STUDY. TEST EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, AND PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED. SINCE SOME SECTIONS OF TEST PAINTS HAVE BEEN IN PLACE FOR LESS THAN A YEAR, A COMPLETE EVALUATION WAS NOT ATTEMPTED; INSTEAD, THE EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON SUCH CHARACTERISTICS AS EASE OF APPLICATION AND DRYING TIME. THE STUDY OF GLASS MARKING BEADS INDICATES BETTER REFLECTION IS OBTAINED WITH GLASS SPHERES HAVING A HIGH INDEX OF REFRACTION. SIX POUNDS OF BEADS PER GALLON AND FIFTEEN MILS WET FILM THICKNESS PROVIDED THE MOST DURABLE STRIPE. BISYMMETRIC BEADS PROVIDE BETTER INITIAL REFLECTANCE BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BECOME COVERED WITH PAINT DURING APPLICATION AS DO MOST OTHER BEADS. WHEN THE EXISTING STRIPE IS MISSING OR VERY POOR THE FIFTEEN MIL FILM THICKNESS STRIPE SHOULD BE PLACED; HOWEVER, THE TEN MIL WET FILM THICKNESS RECOMMENDED BY KANSAS IS SUITABLE FOR MISSISSIPPI ROADS WHEN THE EXISTING STRIPE IS SERVICEABLE OR CLEARLY VISIBLE. /AUTHOR/
