THE INFLUENCE OF PRELIMINARY COMPRESSIVE STRESSES ON THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE

LA INFLUENCIA DE LOS ESFUERZOS PREVIOS DE COMPRESION SOBRE LA RESISTENCIA A TRACCION DEL HORMIGON

TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON CYLINDRICAL SAMPLES WHICH WERE SUBJECTED TO VARIABLE COMPRESSIVE STRESSES, THEN TO TENSILE STRESSES IN THE BRAZILIAN TEST WITH A VIEW TO DETERMINING THE INFLUENCE OF PRELIMINARY COMPRESSION ON TENSILE STRENGTH. THIS INFLUENCE BECOMES MARKED FROM PRELIMINARY INSTANTANEOUS COMPRESSIVE STRESSES AT 65% AND LARGELY DEPENDS ON THE DURATION OF PRELIMINARY COMPRESSION: LOSSES OF 37% ARE OBTAINED FOR HIGH PRELIMINARY COMPRESSIVE STRESSES LASTING 15 MINUTES. IT SEEMS THAT INTERNAL MICROCRACKING, CAUSED BY THE SHRINKAGE OF THE PASTE, SPREADS AND BECOMES MORE EXTENSIVE UNDER THE EFFECT OF PRELIMINARY COMPRESSION AND AFFECTS TENSILE STRENGTH.
