A GEOGRAPHIC CODIFICATION SYSTEM CONSISTS OF ALL THE PROCESSES USED TO IDENTIFY DATA IN SPACE BY LOCATING THEM. TWO OF THE MOST USED DATA-LOCALIZATION SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED: POSTAL ADDRESSES AND ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS. GEOGRAPHIC CODIFICATION SYSTEMS REQUIRE THE USE OF COORDINATES AND A GIVEN TYPE OF CORRESPONDENCE TABLES WHICH FACILITATE THE TRANSCRIPTION OF THE INITIAL DATA INTO A CODIFIED FORM THAT CAN BE SUBJECTED TO A NUMERICAL PROCESS ON COMPUTER. TWO OF THE GEOGRAPHIC CODIFICATION SYSTEMS BEST ADAPTED TO REGIONAL PLANNING ARE DESCRIBED: THE DIME SYSTEM AND THE REGULAR SQUARE MESH; THEY ARE COMPARED AND ILLUSTRATED WITH EXAMPLES, AND THEIR MAIN APPLICATIONS ARE LISTED: (1) RELOCALIZATION OF TERRITORIAL DATA; (2) STATISTICAL MAPPING; (3) SPATIAL STATISTICAL ANALYSIS.
