SYMPOSIUM ON BRAKING SYSTEMS IN RAILWAYS: MODERN SYSTEMS OF BRAKING UNITS AND BRAKES WHEN THE TRAIN IS STATIONARY

SIMPOSIO SOBRE SISTEMA DE FRENADO EN FERROCARRIL: SISTEMAS MODERNOS DE UNIDAD DE FRENADO Y DE FRENO DE ESTACIONAMIENTO

IN PASSENGER TRAINS INCREASE IN SPEED AND THE TENDENCY TO REDUCE WEIGHT PER AXLE REQUIRE IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKING EQUIPMENT. FOR HIGH SPEEDS, THE BRAKES USED ARE: (1) SHOE BRAKES, (2) DISC BRAKES, (3) FOUCAULT CURRENT BRAKES ON THE AXLE, (4) HYDRODYNAMIC BRAKES. ADDITIONAL BRAKES WHICH DO NOT RELY ON ADHESION ARE: (1) MAGNETIC SHOE BRAKES, (2) LINEAR INDUCTION BRAKES, (3) AERODYNAMIC BRAKES. IN ORDER TO USE THE WHEEL/RAIL ADHESION TO ITS MAXIMUM NON-SKID EQUIPMENT IS USED. ON MODERN TRAINS THERE IS GENERALLY TOO LITTLE SPACE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A HEAVY BRAKING SYSTEM, AND INDIVIDUAL AND INDEPENDENT BRAKING LIMITS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED FOR EACH BRAKE; THESE COULD BE DISC OR SHOE BRAKES. SAAB HAS DEVELOPED A COMPLETE NEW RANGE OF BRAKING UNITS WHICH ARE DESCRIBED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF BRAKES USED FOR STATIONARY POSITION: (1) HAND-OPERATED MECHANICAL BRAKES, (2) SPRING-OPERATED BRAKES, (3) "PARK-LOCK BRAKES", (4) HYDRAULIC BRAKES.
