FIRST COURSE ON REGIONAL PLANNING. THEME 7: SOCIOLOGY. 7.1. SOCIOLOGICAL TENDENCIES IN WESTERN EUROPE

I CURSO DE PLANIFICACION TERRITORIAL. TEMA 7: SOCIOLOGIA. 7.1. TENDENCIAS SOCIOLOGICAS EN EUROPA OCCIDENTAL

THE AIM OF ANY FORM OF SOCIOLOGY IS TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN SEVERAL LEVELS OR TYPES OF SOCIAL RELATIONS AND TO STUDY THE CORRESPONDING BEHAVIOUR AT EACH OF THESE LEVELS. THERE ARE FOUR MAIN SCHOOLS OF SOCIOLOGY: (1) FUNCTIONALIST SCHOOL; (2) IDEOLOGICAL SCHOOL; (3) SCHOOL OF DECISIONS OR STRATEGIES; AND (4) APPRENTICESHIP SCHOOL WHICH CONSIDERS SOCIETY AS A FEED-BACK SYSTEM. THE SALIENT ASPECTS OF EACH SCHOOL ARE STUDIED TOGETHER WITH THEIR WEAK POINTS AND LIMITATIONS. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE MAIN PROBLEM OF URBAN PLANNING CONSISTS IN SEPARATING THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF URBAN AREA: (1) THE CITY AS A PRODUCTION UNIT AND FIELD WHERE DIFFERENT CLASSES COME AGAINST EACH OTHER; (2) THE CITY AS A POLITICAL COMMUNITY AND MARKET OF GOODS, INFLUENCE AND COMMUNICATION; (3) THE CITY AS AN INTEGRATED SOCIAL SYSTEM COMPRISING DWELLINGS STRATIFIED ACCORDING TO SOME SOCIAL CATEGORIES.
