TRANSPORT IN NORTH AMERICA

EL TRANSPORTE EN NORTEAMERICA

THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE DIFFERENT MEANS OF TRANSPORT OF FREIGHT AND PASSENGERS IN NORTH AMERICA. IN THE FIELD OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT, IT CONCENTRATES ON THE RAILWAYS WHICH CONSTITUTE THE LARGEST PORTION OF THIS STUDY, AND THE AUTHOR ESTIMATES THAT THEY WILL IN FUTURE OCCUPY THE PREPONDERANT POSITION FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: (1) THEY REQUIRE LESS SPACE THAN ROAD TRANSPORT, (2) THEY PRODUCE LESS ATMOSPHERIC CONTAMINATION, (3) THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION PER TONNE/KM IS LESS THAN THAT OF THE ROADS (THE FIGURES SUPPLIED GIVE A RATIO OF 1:4). THE GENERAL PROBLEM OF INFLATION AND COST IS BRIEFLY EXAMINED. THE DATA HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY THE AMERICAN RAILROADS ASSOCIATION AND UNITED NATIONS PUBLICATIONS.
