THE PROCESS OF OBTAINING TRINIDAD ASPHALT, ITS PREPARATION AND ITS PROPERTIES (DENSITY, PENETRATION, SOFTENING POINT, PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN, PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF MINERAL INGREDIENTS) ARE DESCRIBED. THERE ARE TWO SYSTEMS OF INTRODUCING THE MATERIAL INTO THE MIXTURE: PURE BITUMEN IS ADDED OR NOT, TO REFINED TRINIDAD CUT-BACK (WESTHY DRANLIK SYSTEM) OR (OHL SYSTEM). IT IS USED FOR SEVERAL TYPES OF WEARING COURSES AND IS INCORPORATED IN THE MIXTURES IN VARIOUS PERCENTAGES VARYING BETWEEN 25% IN THE CASE OF GUSSASPHALT AND 50% IN THE CASE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. IT HAS A HIGH LEVEL OF STABILITY AT HIGH TEMPERATURES, THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE COEFFICIENT IS HIGH (MORE THAN 50) AND THE CONSISTENCY OF TRINIDAD BITUMEN IN THE UPPER PART OF THE WEARING COURSE INCREASES WITH TIME, THUS IMPROVING RIGIDITY AND STRENGTH. SATISFACTORY STABILITY COMBINED WITH EVEN BETTER ADHESION GIVES GREAT DURABILITY TO MIXTURES CONTAINING THIS BINDER.
