TRANSPORT, SPREADING AND COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

TRANSPORTE, EXTENDIDO Y COMPACTACION DE MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS

THE DEVELOPMENT OF FULL-DEPTH, WITH THE ASSOCIATED SPREADING OF BITUMINOUS LAYERS OF MORE THAN 10 CM HAS RESULTED IN DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE MIXING PLANTS. APPRECIABLE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERED IN TRANSPORT AND SPREADING, WHICH HAVE BEEN STUDIED HERE. THE TRANSPORT CYCLE MAY BE REDUCED BY MODIFYING THE LOADING AND UNLOADING OF TRUCKS AND BY INCREASING CAPACITY. WITH RESPECT TO SPREADING, IT IS PROPOSED TO ACHIEVE A SINGLE PLANE IN THE LOWER LAYERS, SO THAT THE UPPER LAYERS HAVE CONSTANT THICKNESS. CERTAIN TYPES OF WORK IMPROVED WITH DIFFERENT MACHINES ARE GIVEN, WHERE A COMPACTION BY THE SPREADER GIVING 90% OF THE MAXIMUM DENSITY HAS BEEN OBTAINED, BY A VIBRATING PLATE OR TAMPER. THE FACTORS WHICH PLAY A ROLE IN COMPACTION ARE STUDIED; THEY COMPRISE THE EQUIPMENT, THE INTRINSIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MIXTURE, THE RESISTANCE TO THE COMPACTOR CAUSED BY PROGRESSIVE THICKENING AND THE FALL IN TEMPERATURE OF THE MIXTURE; THE LATTER CAN BE PRODUCED IN TWO WAYS: BY COOLING DUE TO THE LOWER COLDER LAYER OR BY THE INFLUENCE OF THE AMBIENT MEDIUM, WHICH GIVES RISE TO TWO TYPES OF TEMPERATURE GRADIENT OF DIFFERENT SIGN DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR. CERTAIN EXPERIENCE OF COMPACTION OF THICK LAYERS IS PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH THE EVALUATION OF THE COMPACTION TRAIN DURING RECENT YEARS.
