SELECTION OF THE MAXIMUM GRADIENT IN THE DESIGN OF MOUNTAIN ROADS

SELECCION DE LA PENDIENTE MAXIMA DE DISENO EN CAMINOS DE MONTANA.

A METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR OBTAINING THE MAXIMUM GRADIENT AT THE DESIGN STAGE OF MOUNTAIN ROADS. THE PROCEDURE CONSISTS IN MINIMIZING THE TOTAL COST PRICE, WHICH IS THE SUM OF CONSTRUCTION COSTS (TAKEN TO BE INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE MAXIMUM GRADIENT) AND USER COSTS (WHICH DEPEND PARABOLICALLY ON THE DISTANCE TO BE TRAVELLED AND THE GRADIENT). THE MAXIMUM GRADIENT IS SEEN TO BE A FUNCTION OF OPERATION COSTS PER VEH/KM, OF UNIT CONSTRUCTION COSTS, OF THE VOLUME AND GROWTH OF TRAFFIC, AND THE INTEREST RATE ON CAPITAL. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN.
