APPLICATION OF PROBABILISTIC TECHNIQUES TO ANTISEISMIC DESIGN

APLICACIONES PROBABILISTICAS EN DISENO ANTISISMICO.

A PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED FOR FORECASTING THE STRESSES AND DEFORMATIONS LIABLE TO OCCUR IN A STRUCTURE AS A RESULT OF EARTH TREMORS. IT IS BASED ON THE APPLICATION OF PROBABILITY TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED TO SIMULATE SEISMIC MOVEMENTS HAVING SIMILAR STATISTICAL PATTERNS TO REAL TREMORS. INITIALLY THE METHOD WAS VALID ONLY FOR FORECASTING THE ELASTIC STRUCTURAL RESPONSE, BUT IT CAN BE EXTENDED TO DETERMINING THE STRENGTH REQUIRED BY INTERPRETING THE SEISMIC STRESS LEVELS ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF ANTISEISMIC DESIGN. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT THOUGH STRUCTURAL ELASTICITY MUST BE SUFFICIENT TO WITHSTAND MODERATE TREMORS, STRONGER SEISMIC ACTIVITY IS BETTER COUNTERED BY DESIGNING FOR ENERGY ABSORPTION LEADING TO PLASTIC DEFORMATION, RATHER THAN PROVIDING EXTRA STRENGTH.
