MODERN TRENDS IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN

MODERNA ESTRUCTURA DE PAVIMENTOS CON FIRME ASFALTICO.

CERTAIN HUNGARIAN EXPERIENCES REGARDING CONSTRUCTION OF BITUMINOUS COURSES ARE REVIEWED. A TABLE PRESENTS THE DIFFERENT PAVEMENTS WHICH VARY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TYPE OF SOIL (CALIFORNIAN BEARING RATIO), THE TYPE OF TRAFFIC AND THE TYPE OF BASE COURSE (CEMENT STABILIZED SOIL, MECHANICALLY STABILIZED SOIL OR CRUSHED STONE AND BITUMINOUS BASE COURSES). THE PAVEMENTS THUS OBTAINED ARE RELATED TO A TABLE OF EQUIVALENCE, FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE SUPPORT CAPACITY, SO THAT THE MOST ECONOMICAL SOLUTION AMONGST MANY EQUIVALENT SOLUTIONS CAN BE CHOSEN. MATERIALS AND NEW TRENDS REGARDING SURFACINGS ARE LISTED, E.G.: A) SAND-BITUMEN, IN WHICH ROUGHNESS IS OBTAINED BY ROLLING IN CHIPPINGS WITH THE AID OF A VIBRATING ROLLER. THIS IS USEFUL IN AREAS WITH A SCARCITY OF STONE AS IT REQUIRES MUCH LESS CHIPPINGS. B) ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS, WHERE ROUGHNESS IS NATURAL. THE METHOD OF CALCULATING THE THICKNESS OF THE STRENGTHENING COURSE IS PRESENTED AS WELL AS THE METHOD OF WIDENING DEFECTIVE LANES. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN.
