WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS OF STONE AGGREGATES SUBJECTED TO THERMAL EFFECTS

ALTERABILIDAD TERMICA DE LOS AGREGADOS PETREOS.

TESTS ARE DESCRIBED, WHICH WERE CARRIED OUT TO DISCOVER THE ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR OF INERT AGGREGATES WHICH MAKE UP BITUMINOUS MIXES, PARTICULARLY TO DETERMINE THE ALTERATION WHICH ARISES WHEN THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO A HEATING PROCESS. RESULTS MAY BE SUMMARISED AS FOLLOWS: THE LOS ANGELES ABRASION INCREASES WITH THE TIME OF HEATING IN THE OVEN. THE RELATIVE VARIATION IN WEAR IS GREATER FOR THE MORE POROUS AGGREGATES AND FOR THE LARGER GRAINS. THE SEMI LOGARITHMIC CURVE OF THE RATIO BETWEEN WEAR AND TEMPERATURE IS LINEAR. THE ADHERENCE BETWEEN ROCK AND ASPHALT IMPROVES DURING THE COURSE OF HEATING. AGGREGATES WITH A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF MICA PARTICLES, FRACTURE SUDDENLY DURING HEATING. THIS STUDY WAS PRESENTED AT THE 18TH ASPHALT CONFERENCE, WHICH WAS HELD AT BAHIA BLANCA ON 5TH NOVEMBER 1973.
