STANDARDS FOR SAMPLING SOIL DEPOSITS

NORMAS PARA LA TOMA DE MUESTRAS DE UNA FORMACION

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF TAKING SAMPLES ACCORDING TO THE DRILLING SYSTEM USED, AND THE STANDARDISATION OF THE DISPATCH OF SAMPLES TO THE LABORATORY. IN THE CASE OF HOLES DRILLED BY PERCUSSION, FLAT-BOTTOM SPOONS ARE UTILIZED AND THE MATERIAL RECOVERED IS THAT WHICH REMAINS AT THE INTERIOR OF THE CASING; IN THE CASE OF SHAFTS WITHOUT CASING, IN ORDER TO AVOID THE INTRUSION OF THE MATERIAL BELONGING TO HIGHER SOIL LAYERS DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXTRACTION PROCESS, THE SHAFT IS FILLED WITH BENTONITE IN ORDER TO CREATE A PRESSURE WHICH REDUCES THE RISK OF FALLING-IN OF THE WALL OF THE SHAFT; IN THE CASE OF SHAFTS DRILLED BY ROTATION, IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE FINE MATERIAL DOES NOT RISE BEFORE THE LARGER ELEMENTS, THE FLUID IS CIRCULATED WHILST THE SAMPLING TOOL IS WITHHELD UNTIL THE EXTRACTION OF ALL THE DETRITUS; IN GRANULAR LAYERS, A SYSTEM OF BLASTING MAY BE USED. ONCE THE SAMPLE HAS BEEN REMOVED, THE PREPARATION PROCEDURES ARE THE SAME FOR ALL SYSTEMS: REPRESENTATIVE MATERIAL FROM THE SAMPLE IS MIXED AND A QUARTER OF THIS PASTE IS DISPATCHED TO THE LABORATORY. THE SAMPLES ARE PLACED IN PLASTIC SACHETS WHICH GIVE AN INDICATION OF THE DEPTH; SAMPLES ARE NEVER WASHED. IN CASES OF DOUBT IN THE INTERPRETATION, GAMMA RAY INSTRUMENTATION IS EMPLOYED.
