NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND OPERATIONS
THE USE OF HIGH STRENGTH MATERIALS FOR CRITICAL STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS IS ONE EXAMPLE OF RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY WHICH REQUIRES NEW SOPHISTICATED AND RELIABLE TESTING METHODS. ANOTHER CONSTRUCTION ADVANCEMENT IS THE COST-EFFECTIVE CHANGEOVER TO PREFABRICATED AND INDUSTRIALIZED CONSTRUCTION. ADVANCEMENTS IN NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTION CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THIS AREA TO PROVIDE SAVINGS OF TIME AND MONEY BY REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF FIELD INSPECTION REQUIRED AND ALLOWING ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EFFICIENT FABRICATION POINT INSPECTION PROGRAM. THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN SOME CASES WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW NDT METHODS; IT CAN APPLY SOME OF THE METHODS (OR ADAPTATIONS OF THE METHODS) DEVELOPED BY THE AEROSPACE AND REACTOR INDUSTRIES. THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SHOULD BE AWARE OF NDT METHODS NOW AVAILABLE, FOR SOLUTIONS MAY BE READY FOR PROBLEMS THAT DO NOT YET EXIST IN THE INDUSTRY.
