RESEARCH INTO THE ACCELERATION OF THE CORROSION OF STEEL IN REINFORCED CONCRETE - THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRO-CHEMICAL STUDY

RECHERCHE SUR L'ACCELERATION DE LA CORROSION DES ACIERS DANS LE BETON ARME - ETUDE ELECTRO-CHIMIQUE THEORIQUE ET EXPERIMENTALE

WITH THE AIM OF PERFECTING AN ELECTRO-CHEMICAL PROCEDURE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES, THE AUTHORS HAVE STUDIED THE ELECTRO-CHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF TEST SPECIMENS SATURATED IN SALINE SOLUTIONS AND SUBJECTED TO AN ELECTRO-MOTIVE FORCE. THE MAIN IDEA WAS TO ACCELERATE THE PROCESS OF CORROSION OF THE REINFORCEMENT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN RAPID MACROSCOPIC CRACKING ARISING FROM THE INCREASE IN VOLUME OF THE IRON OXIDE HYDRATES FORMED AT THE STEEL/CONCRETE INTERFACE. THE CORROSION PHENOMENA INCREASED IN PROPORTION TO THE RISE IN THE AMOUNT OF CURRENT, SO DOES THE LOSS IN WEIGHT OF REINFORCEMENT, THE QUANTITY OF FERROUS OXIDE FORMED VARIES ACCORDING TO THE NATURE OF THE SALINE SOLUTION USED. IT WAS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE MINIMUM ELECTRIC ENERGY NECESSARY TO OBTAIN THE FIRST MACROSCOPIC CRACK IN A REINFORCED CONCRETE SPECIMEN, WHICH RESULTS FROM THE FORMATION OF STEEL CORROSION PRODUCTS, THE GROSS VOLUME OF WHICH IS GREATER THAN THAT OF THE METAL. THIS QUANTITY OF ENERGY VARIES WITH THE INCREASE IN THE INTENSITY OF CURRENT 1, AND WHERE 1 IS CONSTANT, WITH THE ADDITION OF ACCELERATORS (HYDROGEN PEROXIDE) TO THE SALINE SOLUTION USED.
