PROPOSAL FOR THE DESIGN OF HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL STRUCTURAL MEMBERS WITH HIGH RESISTANCE FATIGUE

USING SAFETY FACTORS CONFORMING TO STANDARD DIN 15018, THE PERMISSIBLE STRESSES ARE DEDUCED FROM STRESS/STRAIN CURVES REPRESENTING EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS UNDER FATIGUE IN THE SHAPE OF A POWER LAW. WITH THIS REPRESENTATION, THE PERMISSIBLE FATIGUE STRESSES ARE GIVEN AS THE PRODUCT OF THE PERMISSIBLE ALTERNATING STRESS BY TWO FACTORS WHICH REPRESENT THE STRESS/LOADING CYCLE RELATION. THUS A LAW OF CUMULATIVE DAMAGE IS APPLICABLE. THE STRENGTH OF WELDED JOINTS OF LOW-STRENGTH STEEL, THE STRESS RATIO OF WHICH IS BETWEEN R = -1 AND R = 0 IS INCLUDED IN THE STUDY IN ORDER TO HAVE RESULTS FOR MORE TYPES OF WELDED JOINTS. THIS WAS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL DOES NOT HAVE ANY ADVANTAGE OVER LOW-STRENGTH STEEL UNLESS THE CONSIDERABLE MEAN STRESSES EXIST OR THE WELDED PART IS SUBJECTED TO SPECIAL TREATMENT. THE CLASSIFICATION OF WELDED JOINTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH DIN 15018 IS ALTERED IN THE RECOMMENDATION PROPOSED FOR DESIGNING FOR FATIGUE WHILE TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE REQUIREMENTS OF SAFETY AND ECONOMY. PERMISSIBLE FATIGUE STRESSES PROPOSED ARE COMPARED TO THE PERMISSIBLE STRESSES SPECIFIED IN EIGHT EUROPEAN STANDARDS.
