CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF TEST PIT WALLS WITH MULTIPLE ANCHORAGE POINTS

A STUDY IS CONDUCTED OF FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR A TEST PIT WALL WITH SIMPLE ANCHORAGE, AND IT IS OBSERVED THAT ANCHORAGE LENGTHS CAN BE DETERMINED WITH SUFFICIENT ACCURACY BY VERIFYING THE WALL STABILITY WITH A STRAIGHT LINE USED AS AN INTERNAL SLIDING WEDGE. THESE CONCLUSIONS ARE APPLIED TO WALLS WITH MULTIPLE ANCHORAGE POINTS. TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE COMBINED ACTION OF ANCHORAGE FORCES IN EACH ANCHORAGE POSITION, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE BASIC SAFETY COEFFICIENTS FOR DIFFERENT POSSIBLE SLIDING SURFACES. FOR A RETAINING SYSTEM COMPRISING ANCHORAGE AND SUPPORT, IT IS SHOWN THAT THE ANCHORAGE DEVICES LOCATED IN THE UPPER PART OF THE WALL CAN BE MARKEDLY SHORTER WHEN THE SUPPORTED LOWER PART OF THE WALL CAN BE CALCULATED USING A COEFFICIENT OF ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE, INCREASED IN RELATION TO THE ACTIVE LIMIT VALUE AND ADDITIONAL PRESSURE CAUSED BY THE ANCHORAGE FORCES. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT EVEN FOR WALLS CALCULATED WITH THE EARTH PRESSURE AT REST, THE ULTIMATE SAFETY NECESSARY MUST BE VERIFIED IN THE INTERNAL SLIDING WEDGES FROM THE ACTIVE LIMIT STATE. THIS VERIFICATION CAN ALSO BE EFFECTED USING EARTH PRESSURE AT REST WHEN THE SAFETY COEFFICIENT HAS BEEN SELECTED ACCORDING TO THE TABLES OF CURVES DRAWN FOR THIS PURPOSE.
