CORROSION OF STEEL IN REINFORCED CONCRETE. TESTS CARRIED OUT IN THE RANCE ESTUARY FROM 1959 TO 1971

CORROSION DES ACIERS DANS LE BETON ARME - ESSAIS REALISES DANS L'ESTUAIRE DE LA RANCE DE 1959 A 1971

APPROXIMATELY ONE HUNDRED REINFORCED CONCRETE SAMPLES WERE PLACED IN THE RANCE ESTUARY WITH A VIEW TO OBSERVING THE CORROSION OF THE REINFORCEMENT AS A FUNCTION OF DIFFERENT FACTORS. THEY WERE PLACED AT FIVE LEVELS AND WERE MADE WITH CONCRETE OF TWO MIX DESIGNS, THE REINFORCEMENT BEING POSITIONED AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES FROM THE SIDES. SOME OF THE SAMPLES WERE CRACKED OR CAST IN TWO PARTS SO AS TO HAVE EXAMPLES OF RESUMPTION OF CONCRETING. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT CRACKING WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN CORROSION. THE QUALITY OF THE CONCRETE COVER AND THICKNESS OF THE LATTER WERE ALSO VERY SIGNIFICANT. CATHODIC PROTECTION AND THE USE OF GALVANIZED STEEL REINFORCEMENT WERE JUDGED TO BE EFFECTIVE MEANS OF PREVENTING CORROSION.
