TOWARDS A NON-CONVENTIONAL QUALITY CONTROL OF CONCRETE

VERS UN CONTROLE DE QUALITE NON CONVENTIONNEL DES BETONS HYDRAULIQUES

THE TRADITIONAL QUALITY CONTROL METHOD FOR CONCRETE BY CRUSHING SAMPLES PREPARED AND CURED INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE STRUCTURE, IS A CONVENTIONAL APPROACH WHICH GIVES NON-REPRESENTATIVE PHYSICAL AND STATISTICAL RESULTS. TO REMEDY THIS WEAKNESS, THE LCPC HAS DEVELOPED AN INTEGRATED CONTROL SYSTEM THAT RECORDS CONCRETE MANUFACTURE PARAMETERS. THE SYSTEM PERMITS (1) TO VERIFY WHETHER CONCRETE MIX DESIGN CONFORMS TO THE STANDARDS, TO EVALUATE THE QUALITY OF INGREDIENT MIXING FOR EACH BATCH AND EVENTUALLY TO GET RID OF ANY DEFECTIVE BATCH IN GOOD TIME; (2) TO DETECT IMMEDIATELY ANY ANOMALY OR IRREGULARITY IN THE OPERATION OF THE PLANT; (3) TO DETERMINE QUICKLY THE STATISTICAL PARAMETERS OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GIVEN MANUFACTURING OPERATION. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE EQUIPMENT USED AND OF THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DATA. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM TO THE SPONSOR, CONTRACTOR AND INSPECTOR. THE METHOD PROPOSED USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTS FOR ASSESSING THE QUALITY OF IN-SITU CONCRETE, IS AN ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT IN THE QUALITY OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES.
