DESIGN OF TUNNELS IN EXPANSIVE ROCK

DIMENSIONNEMENT DES TUNNELS EN ROCHE GONFLANTE

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A METHOD OF PLANNING TUNNELS TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN SHALE, MARL AND ANHYDRITE. THIS METHOD IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS: TESTS - DESIGN - CONSTRUCTION. SWELLING PHENOMENA ARE REVIEWED TOGETHER WITH THEIR POSSIBLE CAUSES, AND A SPECIAL STUDY IS MADE OF THE SWELLING OF CLAYEY SHALE, MARL AND ANHYDRITE. ONCE THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH SWELLING OCCURS IN UNDERGROUND EXCAVATIONS ARE KNOWN, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THIS PHENOMENON. THE "TEST-DESIGN-PROJECT" PROCESS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL TOGETHER WITH THE DIFFERENT MEANS OF REDUCING SWELLING EFFECTS. SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF SWELLING IN TUNNELS DRILLED IN MARL AND ANHYDRITE ARE GIVEN. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE ROCK MECHANICS SYMPOSIUM WHICH TOOK PLACE AT MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, USA IN SEPTEMBER 1975.
