NOTES ON THE "DYNAPLAQUE" (DYNAPLATE)

SUR LA DYNAPLAQUE

THIS SHORT NOTE GIVES DETAILS OF THE INFLUENCE OR LACK OF INFLUENCE OF THE NATURE OF THE SOIL ON THE CALIBRATION CURVE GIVEN BY THE APPARATUS. IT IS SHOWN THAT: (1) THE DYNAPLAQUE ENABLES THE DEFORMABILITY OF THE WIDTH OF THE EARTHWORKS TO BE EVALUATED WHEN SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC STRESSES SIMILAR TO THOSE CAUSED BY THE PASSING OF A 13 TONNE AXLE MOVING AT 60 KM/H; (2) CRITICISMS CAN BE LEVELLED AGAINST THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE COMPACTION OF EMBANKMENT LAYERS FROM THE RESTITUTION COEFFICIENT MEASURED WITH THE DYNAPLAQUE, FOR IN NEARLY ALL NATURAL MATERIALS THERE EXISTS NO SIMPLE RELATION BETWEEN THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION AND THE STATE OF COMPACTION. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT THE CALIBRATION CURVE DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE NATURE OF THE SOIL, BUT THAT THIS CURVE IS SPECIFIC TO EACH APPARATUS AND MUST BE PLOTTED EACH TIME THAT A CHANGE IS MADE TO A MECHANICAL COMPONENT INFLUENCING THE RESTITUTION COEFFICIENT AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE SPRINGS.
